Super Bowl food= Appetizer Thanksgiving?

Last night was the Super Bowl. Let me start this by saying that I really give zero cares about football. (But I might have if the had Chiefs made it! Yes, I’m still bitter.) I know that those words probably break my dads heart because he helped coach high school football when I was a kid, but it’s the truth. It’s boring and I don’t know what’s going on. I feel like the Super Bowl is only good for the following:

  1. Snacks
  2. Commercials
  3. The Half time show (maybe)

Probably ten years ago I threw a big Super Bowl party at my house. I went all out with food and margaritas and planning. I even made a cake that looked like a football field! How many minutes of the game did I watch? Zero probably. I sat on my front porch and drank margaritas instead. But goodness do I remember how much cooking and eating I did that day! One of my favorite parties ever. (Sorry, can’t find any pictures)

Yesterday morning I woke up and my first thought was FOOD. We went to church and then when I came home I got started on chicken wings and little smokies. Sorry, no pics of what we made (I was hungry!) But here are links to the recipes:

Hot Wings

Rotel Dip

And then we made little smokies. We did two packages of cocktail sausages with 1 bottle of Sweet Baby Ray’s Honey BBQ in the crockpot on low for 3 hours.

I wish I had made some tortilla roll ups and a veggie tray so we will do that next year!

Anyway, this lead me to think… I was more excited about Super Bowl food than I ever am about Thanksgiving. I don’t spend weeks thinking about Turkey. I threw away 7/8 of a pumpkin pie last Thanksgiving. I don’t fantasize about green bean casserole. But, I have been thinking about our Super Bowl menu for about a month. We normally go to my parents for lunch or dinner for Thanksgiving and we always have the discussion.. “Well, should we cook this year?” It just stinks to not have leftovers to eat when we are home. But also, turkey leftovers get boring after a while.

I am really toying with the idea of having an appetizer Thanksgiving next year. Yes, it sounds ridiculous but since we get a traditional Thanksgiving anyway, why not? Honestly, we are adults and there is literally no one policing what we have for our Thanksgiving feast. This will be something for me to think about for sure! Do you do any non-traditional meals for Thanksgiving?
